I managed to get a hold of a copy of Town & Country’s October 07 Special Issue featuring the designer Ralph Lauren. The article talks about his early life as a boy and how he didn’t come from a well-to-do home, but rather a middle class upbringing. He was the youngest of 4, and commented that he always seemed to get the hand me downs, but as he got older he earned his own money and bought what he wanted. In 1971 he started designing clothing for women inspired by his wife Ricky. When the couple started dating, they loved to shop together, as he tells about a time when he ventured into a riding apparel store with Ricky and bought her a boy’s tweed hacking jacket which fit her beautifully. From that moment he was inspired to design clothes for women.

Although he never went to fashion school, he knew he had a sense of self direction, and that confidence brought him to where he is today.

” I worked part time at Brooks Brothers and then went to work for a well respected tie company. My colleagues dressed very traditionally, but I was going to custom tailoring, picking my own fabrics and having special suits made with wide lapels and double side vents. I asked for a chance to put together some of my own tie concepts, and even though they were rejected, I discovered I had something to say. I convinced a well established tie company in Cincinnati, Ohio to bring me on, and in 1967 they gave me a “drawer” to work out of in the Empire State Building. I was alone but on my own. I went out and found fabrics in all kinds of places. They were untraditional, flamboyant and dandified. I loved the look of the wide tie. I had seen it on some stylish character like the duke of Windsor or in a movie or magazine from the thirties. I found a small manufacturer to make them and I remember one Thanksgiving sitting in the warehouse sewing on the labels with Ricky and her mother and father. On the label was the name “Polo” I delivered the ties myself in an old bomber jacket and jeans”

Wow! Ralph Lauren Will Dress The U.S. Olympic Team In Vancouver!

According to news reports, U.S. Olympic athletes will march in the closing ceremony parade wearing clothing by designer Ralph Lauren! The outfits will reportedly include red and blue shawl-collar sweaters with antique buttons, newsboy caps, plaid shirts for the men and navy ribbed turtlenecks for the women. This is a great coup for a company that is already flying high despite the recent economic downturn. Literally hundreds of millions of people around the world will watch the winter Olympic games in Vancouver, and this will be a great opportunity for the company to potentially reach hordes of new customers around the globe.

In calling the Olympics the “ultimate branding opportunity”, David Lauren let it be known that the company was very sensitive to tradition while designing outfits for the Olympic winter games in Vancouver…..

“We took a lot of inspiration from the 1930’s games, reaching into the heyday of the Olympics and bringing to a more modern sensibility.”

But this is hardly the first time that Ralph Lauren has outfitted a U.S. Olympic team. The company provided outfits for the summer games two years ago, and they already have an agreement to provide ceremonial clothing and for the London 2012 games.

This news just underscores the fact that Ralph Lauren increasingly defines what the “all-American look” is all about. Many designers react to trends, but Ralph Lauren is almost always out front setting them. Kudos to them for this great achievement, and it is our contention that many of these Olympic designs will fly out of the stores once they are released to the public.

When a person hits the hight of celebrity status, their life is no longer private. I am sure the anonymity of their past becomes a luxury in most celebrities thoughts. The public is enamoured with the “rich and famous”, wanting a peak into their glamourous lives with all the cash available to buy up any dream. Sickly, I think the public loves to hear the gossip of broken marriages, and failed hollywood relationships on magazine covers because it gives them something to talk about, and makes their lifes seem a whole lot better. Rarely does the average person see themselves in a celebrity. They see a glamourized version of someone they “can” be, which sells clothes, magazines and jewelry. Dylan Lauren is shockingly down to earth, like a friend next door. She is confident, sure of her self, and very humble. In this interview I was also surprised to hear of Ralph Laurens long time marriage to his wife Ricki. (I guess we now know where the Ricki Bag comes from) Rarely do you see a Hollywood marriage stick together, as a result of wealth and success which effects the ego. There is nothing more awesome than to see a devoted couple in marriage, not effected by the seduction of lust, wealth and worldly desires. Here is one couple and family not effected by the common snares of success.

Rapper 88′ knew he belonged in hip-hop after hearing Prince Paul’s production on De La Soul’s 1989 critically acclaimed album 3 Feet High and Rising. During an interview with Metro 88′ he revealed his obsession for the Polo Ralph Lauren label, which he admits he has worn for 16 years.

“ I try to stay true to Ralph’s vision. I don’t want to bastardize his vision — no offense to the urban community — because we all know what happened to Tommy Hilfiger once the hip hop community embraced it. I’ll walk out of the door dressed in loafers when everyone else is wearing Timberland boots. I definitely stand out. I’ll tag along with Kanye on shopping trips and look at clothing by designers whose names I’d need to take French lessons to pronounce. He’ll ask me what I think and I’ll be like, whatever. I’ve turned down paying gigs because they’ve tried to dress me in clothing by other designers. Besides record shopping, the only other place I need is a Polo store. I’ll go to Paris and they’ll be like, ‘here’s the Eiffel tower’ and I’m like, ‘whatever, where’s the record store and the Polo store. ”

This falls collection is ultra rich and classic elegance. The show was opened up with a black dress, and moved into the taupe and tweed suiting, soft pastel knits, and rich velvet dresses. The show was finishing up with antique ivories and liquid metals that were shiny and silky. His breathtaking designs were all very feminine and classical in style.
